Nissan Australia has confirmed its Navara Pro PHEV ute will come to Australian showrooms in 2027.
The Chinese-manufactured ute was first shown at the 2025 Auto Shanghai Motor Show as the Frontier Pro, a badge it shares with its US mid-size pick-up.
The vehicle is the result of a collaboration between Nissan and Zhengzhou and is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a transmission-mounted electric motor. The combined output is claimed to be in excess of 300kW and up to 800Nm.
“Utes have been central to Nissan in Australia for decades, with the Navara now spanning five generations,” said Steve Milette, Managing Director, Nissan Oceania. “The sixth generation of the Navara nameplate, the all-new Navara Pro PHEV, is the next expression of that commitment – combining the capability and versatility customers expect from a Navara with new electrified technology, while opening a new chapter for Nissan’s ute offering in Australia.”
Nissan has had pre-production prototypes of the Navara Pro testing in Australia for more than 12 months, racking up thousands of kilometres over varied terrain. That testing showed that the 1.5-litre ICE power plant in the Chinese-specification Frontier Pro show car wouldn’t cut it for Australian buyers, so we will get the 2.0-litre engine.
Similarly, the 2025 Frontier show car rode on a 5-link, coil-sprung rear suspension, but the local testing has been conducted with prototypes using both this set-up and a more conventional leaf-spring live-axle configuration. Nissan isn’t yet saying what it has settled on for us, but will reveal full details closer to the launch.

The Navara Pro PHEV is a proper 4×4 with mechanical drive through the transmission to the axles, where driver-selectable diff locks will be offered. It will utilise Nissan’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive to control torque distribution. It will offer four selectable drive modes (ECO, Standard, Sport and Slippery) and seven terrain modes (Standard, Deep Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, Wading and Expert). Each mode adjusts the vehicle’s powertrain, steering and traction-control mapping to optimise performance across a broad range of driving conditions and requirements.
Nissan is promising proper ute capability from the PHEV, including a 1000kg payload and a 3500kg towing capacity. A vehicle-to-load (V2L) port will allow the plug-in hybrid battery to supply up to 6kW to power campsite or worksite accessories. The PHEV show ute was wearing 18-inch alloys and 265/65R18 tyres, but the final local specs are yet to be revealed.
Prices and full specifications, including battery specs and EV driving range, will be announced closer to launch next year.
