A new-generation GR Sport is reportedly set to join the Toyota HiLux range in 2027.

South African publication Cars.co.za (↗) reports Toyota South Africa Motors has confirmed the ninth-generation HiLux range will gain a GR Sport flagship, with the model expected to arrive sometime next year. The news was revealed by Andrew Kirby, president and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors, during an interview at Naamsa’s SA Auto Week 2026 event in Durban earlier in October.

The new GR Sport has yet to be revealed, and Toyota has not confirmed whether it will retain the widebody configuration of the previous GR Sport. However, this is considered likely due to the popularity of the previous model and the investment involved in developing its wider track.

The powertrain is also unconfirmed, although Cars.co.za (↗) expects the new model could retain the uprated 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel from the previous GR Sport. It produces 165kW and 550Nm, compared with 150kW and 500Nm in the standard engine. A six-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive are also expected to be standard.

The new model is tipped to feature over-fenders, model-specific wheels with chunky tyres, upgraded suspension, a bespoke front-end design and GR branding. Interior upgrades are also anticipated.

The HiLux GR Sport arrived in Australia in 2023, based on the previous-generation model. It featured wider tracks, upgraded suspension and an uprated 2.8-litre turbo-diesel producing 165kW and 550Nm. The model has since been discontinued.

Toyota Australia has yet to confirm whether the new HiLux GR Sport will return to Australia.
