MGU9 EV specs released, Australia gets it first

MG has released key info and specs for its new MGU9 EV, with Australia to be the first market globally to receive the all-electric ute.

The electric dual-cab will offer a 3500kg braked towing capacity, putting it on par with many diesel-powered utes when it comes to towing. It uses a 102.2kWh LFP battery and dual electric motors, with all-wheel drive and four-wheel electronic air suspension.

The MGU9 EV produces 325kW and 700Nm, with a claimed WLTP range of 430km. Unbraked towing is rated at 750kg, while payload is 685kg.

The ute has a 236-litre frunk, while the tub can accommodate a standard pallet. It also gets vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, supplying up to 6.6kW through the external CCS2 outlet and 2.2kW through each of three outlets inside the cabin. AC charging is supported at up to 11kW, while DC charging at up to 115kW takes about 42 minutes to go from 20 to 80 per cent. The MGU9 EV can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds.

“With 430km of range, 3.5-tonne towing, 325kW of power and V2L capability, the MGU9 EV is designed to handle everyday driving as well as weekends away,” added Meng Chen, Head of Product at MG Motor Australia. “It gives customers the option to move to an electric ute without giving up the utility and flexibility they expect from the segment.”

Inside, there are dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 15W wireless charging and an eight-speaker JBL sound system. The driver’s seat is heated, ventilated and offers massage functionality, while the front passenger seat and steering wheel are also heated.

A hands-free automatic tailgate and 360-degree camera system are also fitted, and it comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

The EV will join the diesel-powered MGU9 in showrooms. The diesel range comprises Explore, Explore X and Explore Pro variants priced from $55,000 to $65,000. It uses a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel producing 160kW and 520Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic and full-time all-wheel drive, and has a 3500kg towing capacity.

Pricing for the MGU9 EV has not been released.
