Chery is continuing to fine-tune its Stockman diesel plug-in hybrid ute ahead of its Australian launch, with local ride and handling development ongoing and final specifications still to be confirmed.
Melbourne engineering specialist Premcar is working on the Stockman’s local development program, including suspension and steering calibration. The work is aimed at adapting the ute to Australian roads and driving conditions before customer deliveries begin in February 2027.
Load carrying remains another question mark. Preliminary figures put the Stockman’s payload at 765kg, based on a 3500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM) and 2735kg kerb mass. That’s 235kg short of the one-tonne target previously outlined for the ute, although the final Australian figures are yet to be confirmed.
The preliminary specifications also list a 3495kg braked towing capacity and 6500kg gross combination mass (GCM). At maximum towing weight, the difference between the GCM and the combined kerb mass and trailer weight leaves 270kg for occupants, accessories and cargo. Towball download counts towards payload, too, which limits how much gear buyers can carry when towing.
The Stockman pairs a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 140kW and 450Nm with a 34kWh battery. Claimed combined outputs are 350kW and 800Nm, while electric driving range is listed at up to 96km on the WLTP cycle. The ute also gets all-wheel drive and front, centre and rear differential locks.
Last week, it was confirmed that Australian off-road equipment specialist Ironman 4×4 is developing accessories for the Stockman, including a bullbar, canopy and 50mm suspension lift. A federally approved GVM upgrade is planned for after launch.
Pricing remains unannounced, with first customer deliveries targeted for February 2027.
