BYD Shark recall affects 32,009 variants in Australia

BYD Australia is recalling approximately 32,009 Sharks over a potential spare wheel cable failure that could cause the wheel to detach.

The recall covers Premium, Performance and Dynamic Cab Chassis models produced between 29 August 2024 and 15 June 2026. BYD says incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque can cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable.

Continued movement and friction during vehicle operation can cause the cable to fail, potentially resulting in the spare wheel detaching from the vehicle. BYD says this could create a hazard to other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death.

What owners need to do

BYD will replace the Spare Wheel Lifter Assembly with an updated design free of charge. The repair is expected to take approximately 30 minutes, although vehicles may need to remain with the dealer for longer depending on workshop scheduling.

Owners of affected vehicles who wish to continue driving should remove the spare wheel until the recall repair has been completed. Instructions for removing it are provided on page 259 of the Shark Owner’s Handbook. BYD says owners will be contacted via email, while customers using the BYD App may also receive a notification.

Owners should contact their BYD dealer as soon as possible to arrange the repair. Additional questions can be directed to the BYD Australia Customer Care Centre on 1800 888 293. Owners are advised to have their 17-digit VIN available. The VIN can be viewed through the lower corner of the front windscreen on the driver’s side or on the B-pillar nameplate when the driver’s door is open.

BYD says only the Shark variants listed above are affected by this recall in Australia.
