The Toyota Fortuner is a HiLux-based seven-seat wagon with impressive off-road nous.

Much like the HiLux, the Fortuner has essentially been around in its current guise since 2015, but it has received significant updates during that time. The current line-up consists of three variants – GX, GXL and Crusade – and all are powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 150kW and 500Nm and paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity is limited to 3100kg, which is lower than its closest competitors.

Pros

  • Strong 2.8L turbo-diesel engine delivers solid towing and off-road capability
  • Standard 4WD across all variants enhances all-terrain versatility
  • Reliable and proven Toyota platform with widespread service support

Cons

  • Dated interior design lags behind newer rivals in tech and comfort
  • Third-row seats are cramped and reduce boot space when in use
  • Lacks hybrid or more fuel-efficient powertrain options
