Ford has officially confirmed the electrified Bronco Basecamp will arrive in Australia and New Zealand in the second half of 2027, following the initial confirmation of the Bronco nameplate for Australia earlier this month.

The Chinese-made Basecamp is a light-duty plug-in hybrid SUV, with electric motors driving the front and rear axles rather than a conventional mechanical four-wheel-drive system. Its 49kWh usable battery is paired with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that can charge the battery when required, while the battery can also be charged using home or commercial chargers. Ford estimates a combined touring range of 800 to 900km.

The Basecamp also gets several features aimed at camping and extended trips, including vehicle-to-load power for appliances and power tools, an induction cooktop integrated into a tailgate-mounted mini kitchen, and a food heater/chiller box. The rear seats fold flat to create a double bed, while a pop-up roof provides ventilation and allows occupants to sit upright inside.

“When we looked at how Aussies and Kiwis spend their time outdoors, the national parks, the coastal trails, and the distances they travel, the fit was immediate,” said Ambrose Henderson, Marketing Director at Ford Australia. “Outdoor life here isn’t a trend, it’s just life. Bronco Basecamp was purpose-built for these customers.”

The Basecamp is not the same vehicle as the Bronco Sport sold in the US and other markets. Instead, it is part of a Ford-JMC joint venture in China, with styling that draws from both the Bronco Sport and sixth-generation Bronco. The round headlights and traditional Bronco grille are among the styling cues carried across.
